As a reproductive freedom organization, Pro-Choice Washington is deeply disappointed with the election of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States.
Since becoming an independent advocacy organization three years ago, Pro-Choice Washington has worked tirelessly to protect abortion access for anyone who comes to our state or provides care to patients.
Interim Executive Director Sami Alloy issued the following statement:
“First let me say: As a long-time activist, mother of a young daughter, and queer person living in America, I am with you in your shock, anxiety and disappointment with the election results.
Like you, Pro-Choice Washington is alarmed about what this means for the future of abortion care in the United States and the clinics that provide essential health care every day. But let’s be clear: Abortion is still legal and available in Washington state.
We saw last night that voters, including many who voted for Trump, passed ballot measures affirming abortion rights in seven states. And yet, Trump, his allies, and conservative lawmakers have been clear that they will continue to erode our rights to abortion access.
The consequences of Trump’s first administration–with the appointment of three far-right, anti-abortion judges who overturned Roe v. Wade–were disastrous for reproductive freedom.
Abortion bans across the country were a direct result of Trump’s actions and have led to harmful outcomes. Trump era policies have already caused the deaths of patients, the criminalization of pregnancy outcomes, the erosion of safety and dignity in the healthcare process, and the threat against providers and their clinics.
We know that anti-abortion politicians will work in conjunction with the Trump presidency to seek a national abortion ban, as outlined in Project 2025. The election of Donald Trump will more than likely give them a green light to pursue far reaching laws and bans.
But, this is not a foregone conclusion, and it will not happen overnight. Pro-Choice Washington and our coalition partners have worked hard to protect our rights in Washington, and as a result, are in a strong position to remain a sanctuary state for abortion care.
Despite this disastrous outcome in the presidential election, election results in Washington have given us much to be hopeful about.
Pro-Choice Washington activists worked hard to secure victories for reproductive freedom champions, including our next governor, Bob Ferguson, Attorney General Nick Brown, Emily Randall for Congress, and others who will stand up to the Trump administration to ensure that Washington remains an abortion sanctuary state.
But they cannot do the work alone.
We must stand with these politicians and continue to build on the legacy that so many activists and advocates fought for over the last 50 years. It is clear that this fight is far from over.
We hope you join us.”
