Who We Are
Pro-Choice Washington, formerly NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, is the only independent reproductive freedom advocacy organization in Washington state. We believe every person deserves complete reproductive and bodily autonomy.
Our organization is powered by a statewide network of nearly 50,000 members, donors, and activists who are speaking up for reproductive rights through advocacy, community engagement, and education. Pro-Choice Washington’s advocacy work, as a 501(c)4 non-profit, is complemented by the Pro-Choice Washington Foundation and the Pro-Choice Washington Political Action Committee.
The Pro-Choice Washington Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization and the research and education arm of our movement, focusing on grassroots capacity building, community and lawmaker issue education, policy change, and leadership development.
The Pro-Choice Washington Political Action Committee (PAC) helps elect reproductive rights and justice champions at all levels of state and local government. It directs financial and in-kind contributions to candidates endorsed by Pro-Choice Washington and who are aligned with our values and our communities’ needs.
Once candidates are elected, Pro-Choice Washington and the Pro-Choice Washington Foundation work with these state and municipal leaders to pass policies that expand equitable access to reproductive freedom for all people.
Vision
A future where every person has complete reproductive and bodily autonomy.
Mission
To protect, restore, and expand every person’s right and ability to access the full range of affordable, quality, and unbiased abortion, sexual, and reproductive healthcare information and services through movement-building, community education, and grassroots advocacy.
Our Impact
Pro-Choice Washington has been active in the state since 1976 and is responsible for pivotal progress such as helping pass the Freedom of Choice Act in 1991, which codified Roe v. Wade into state law.
More recently, Pro-Choice Washington has helped pass more than 25 critical bills to advance reproductive freedom. These bills have made it easier for patients and families to procure contraceptives, strengthened parental leave policies, ensured comprehensive sexuality education no matter a student’s zip code, made it illegal to deny life-saving care to pregnant patients, and built in critical protections for patients and providers in wake of the Dobbs decision. You can read more about how these policies have built a stronger environment here.
Pro-Choice Washington has led multi-state multimedia campaigns to share welcoming abortion access information, run voter registration campaigns, published toolkits and guides to help everyone better navigate a challenging and ever-changing system, and participated in numerous coalitions to drive systems change.
We have also helped secure a reproductive freedom majority in the Washington State Legislature. In 2017, we flipped party control of the State Senate for the first time in five years. In 2018, we flipped a critical Senate seat, ousting a long-time conservative lawmaker, in 2020, we helped elect 11 new progressive candidates, and in 2022 we helped flip long-time districts. Just to name a few!
