On September 13, Senator Lindsey Graham introduced a national abortion ban that would prevent access to care after 15 weeks of pregnancy in all 50 states, including Washington state.
This shows that the conservative lawmakers who fought to overturn Roe v. Wade are not defending states’ rights as they claimed, but are instead fighting to taking away the fundamental rights of all Americans. It also confirms there is no scientific backing to their arbitrary restrictions.
If conservative candidates win more seats in the U.S. Senate in 2022 and 2024, a national abortion ban will become a real possibility.
Abortion rights and reproductive healthcare in Washington state are not guaranteed. We have spent decades ensuring that abortion care is legal in Washington state, but a national abortion ban would overturn that work in one fell swoop.
Most adults nationally (57 percent), and in Washington state (60 percent), disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe.
“Conservative lawmakers are consistently out of step with the American people, but this only matters if we make our voices heard,” said Kia Guarino, Executive Director of Pro-Choice Washington. “Washington state has the responsibility to not only maintain the legal right to abortion here at home, but also to vote to protect abortion nationally. The agenda to take away every single person’s right to fundamental healthcare is clear. We cannot let this happen.”
This November, it is essential to vote for pro-abortion rights leaders at all levels of government. We have a limited time to act, and a responsibility to use our voices.
