No Excuse for Poor Journalism
Spokane – “Anti-choice hosts of the Walk for Life are leaning on unscientific, deceptive arguments published ‘Beyond Abortion’, a recent column by Sue Lani Madsen in the Spokesman Review,” said Tiffany Hankins, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, “Madsen, like many leaders in the anti-choice movement, pretend to sympathize with women who’ve chosen abortion, but instead further stigmatize the choice to end a pregnancy. We know that 95% of women do not regret their abortions. “
“The publication of the article ‘Beyond Abortion’ highlights the deceptive practices used by anti-choice activists in Spokane and all across Eastern Washington. Not only do they deceive women through the substantial presence of fake Health Clinics throughout the region, but here they seek to confuse women who should be trusted with their right to seek safe and legal abortion and reproductive health services.” said Norma Heredia, Eastern Washington Organizer based in Spokane of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, “Despicably, this article is a recruiting tactic for the extremist Walk for Life event.”
“Madsen believes in taking away rights from women and putting them at harm. Her views are irresponsible to the greater public health of our community and erode much of the progress we have made over the past 50 years at advancing women’s rights,” said Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho in a statement. “We urge the Spokesman-Review to cancel this column because no amount of fact-checking could stop Madsen from writing so irresponsibly. In the meantime, we hope she listens to actual medical professionals while we will continue to do everything we can to help women achieve their hopes and dreams as they choose when it’s appropriate to have children.”
