Statement from Pro-Choice Washington Executive Director Kia Guarino on Leaked Dobbs v. Jackson Draft Opinion

May 2, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Kia Guarino, 206-624-1990

SEATTLE (May 2, 2022) – Pro-Choice Washington Executive Director Kia Guarino released the following statement tonight after a United States Supreme Court draft majority opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was obtained by Politico. The opinion, written by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, overturns the 1973 Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey decisions, which guaranteed federal constitutional abortion protections.

“While we are not surprised by the Supreme Court’s draft majority opinion, it is incredibly difficult to read the words of Justice Alito. The leaked draft demonstrates the Court’s readiness to overturn a half-century of legal precedent, and claims that abortion is not central to a person’s life and liberty.

It is also important to remember that this is not a final decision. Today, federal abortion rights remain protected. This is the case until a final decision is announced by the Supreme Court on the Dobbs v. Jackson case.

It does, however, mean that our fears were founded and that we have a limited time in Washington and the Northwest to organize, raise our voices at the polls, and mobilize in support of abortion clinics and funding.

Today, we can feel the heartbreak of the moment. Tomorrow, we will keep going. We will not stop until all people can access the reproductive healthcare they need. We welcome you with open arms to join this movement.”
